About Morena Kawhe

Origins of Morena Kawhe

We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Country on which we meet today, the  Darug and Eora peoples, and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.  Morena Kawhe acknowledges they are of continuing importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living today.

Morena Kawhe is a family owned coffee love letter from Phid and Charis Oldfield to Aotearoa, New Zealand and a thank you card to Australia.

Derived from te reo Māori, the official language of Aotearoa, New Zealand.  “Mōrena” meaning Morning and “Kawhe” meaning coffee.  Morena also is a Italian, Spanish & Portugese name derived from the moreno meaning ‘brown haired’ while in the Sesotho language it means king or Chief/Lord.  All of which are perfect descriptions of our coffee.

Phid and Charis moved to Sydney Australia in 2016 and quickly began to miss the strength of creamy coffee that they had been accustomed to in New Zealand.

Australia’s coffee culture is incredibly strong, and not long after the duo were exposed to the various methods of coffee making, representative of the Australia culture, with various flavours and mixes.

In 2020 Covid-19 struck the world and unable to get their “coffee fix” stranded with instant or weak coffee brands and admittedly boredom, Phid and Charis embarked on a journey to find a coffee that represented the strength & creaminess of Aotearoa, New Zealand while also thanking Indigenous Australia & Australia, who now housed the two.

Guided by two very Italian Australians and much more professional coffee experts and their team, the boutique coffee Morena Kawhe was born.

Morena Kawhe supports Indigenous Australia and Marae back home in New Zealand, Aotearoa.

Because of this Morena Kawhe is an active sponsor of  the ‘Pay the rent’ initiative and Marae back home with payments made monthly from a percentage of our profits.
